Description: Alt. 7,657 to 8,239 ft. **Call first to ensure Barbara or Bob will be at the inn when you arrive to register. Trail is on county & BLM maintained gravel roads through a combination of woods and high plains. Trail begins through the 2-block-long city, past the 1/2 mile-long hump of gold mine tailings. Keep an eye out for pronghorn antelope, mule deer, moose and domestic cattle. On a loop road, the trail heads toward the area where, in the 1870s, troops from Fort Stambaugh protected miners and pioneers. At the small 1875-era Miners Delight cemetery, follow a short trail to the 1868 Miners Delight mine, and poke around its abandoned log cabins and myriad mining accouterments. There, the quiet forest and beaver pond is a pristine place to rest or eat your bag lunch or snacks. The trail continues past the Gold Dollar and Caribou gold mines. Carry water, and use sunscreen. Dogs should be leashed. Walk during daylight hours only. On the route, bag lunches and snacks are available at Miner's Grubstake (closed Mondays) or Atlantic City Mercantile (closed Tuesdays).
