Description: The walk starts at the Johnston Ridge Observatory and goes east on the Boundary trail. Great views of the Mt St Helens crater, Toutle River Valley and the blast zone can be seen on the entire route. Only the 12 km route has outstanding views of Spirit Lake and its roving collection of floating log debris from the downed trees. Downed trees are also along the walking trails. The walk is on natural trails of dirt, ash, gravel and some rock. BRING YOUR CAMERA ON THIS WALK.

Start Times: 8 am to 1 pm
Location: Toutle Lake High School Gym, 5050 Spirit Lake Highway, Toutle, WA
Start Point / Driving Directions: Take I-5 exit 49 and drive east on the Spirit Lake Highway SR 504 to the town of Toutle. The Gym will be on your left at the end of the main school complex. This is a remote start and it will require that you drive 40 miles to the Johnston Ridge Observatory
Awards & Fees: IVV Credit Only
Comments: On the 12 km route just past the 6 km turnaround is a short (approximately 100 meters) of very narrow trail called "devils elbow" with a very steep dropoff going over 1,00 feet down. If you are afraid of heights, we recommend that you only do the 6 km distance for this walk. Hiking Poles are recommended if you have them.
