Description: The 7 km and 20km will start at Coldwater Lake and walk 1 km to the Hummocks Trailhead where the 5 km route starts. Entering the Hummocks Trail, you will pass through a restored forest with small streams and several ponds with lots of small wildlife. The Hummocks Trail passes by many very large hummocks created by the eruption and next to the Toutle River where you can view the great amounts of erosion of the blast material. You will also see the mud flow from the crater. Interpretive signs are along the Hummock Trail. The Hummock Trail (5 and 7 km routes) is rated 2. The 20 km trail will continue on the Boundary Trail gradually climbing the face of Johnston Ridge with great views of Mt St Helens, Coldwater and Castle Lakes, downed timber in fallen rows, and the Toutle Valley watershed with the eroded ash from the blasts. The 20 km trail will continue to Johnston Ridge Observatory and then return. The 20 km trail is rated 4.

Location: Toutle Lake High School Gym, 5050 Spirit Lake Highway, Toutle, WA
Start Point / Driving Directions: Take I-5 exit 49 and drive east on the Spirit Lake Highway SR 504 to the town of Toutle. The Gym will be on your left at the end of the main school complex. This is a remote start and it will require that you drive 34 miles to Coldwater Lake.

Comments: Hiking poles and plenty of water are recommended for this walk especially the 20 km route.
