Description: Double Peak/Discovery Lake hike. This is a wonderful hike that offers spectacular 360 degree views of the coastline from La Jolla to Camp Pendleton and east into the mountains. The route begins at Discovery Lake and uses wide, groomed city trails to make a wide loop up to the hills. A level single-track trail cuts across the hills and detours up to to the top of Double Peak which offers 360 degree views. The loop then slopes back down to Discovery Lake on wide city trails. The San Marcos hills stay green all year round. Lots of exposure makes for excellent views but it can be hot in high summer. The 5K route has about 400' gain and circles Discovery Lake and uses city trails without reaching Double Peak. The 10K loop to Double Peak has 1000' gain. Carry water and a hat and sunscreen are recommended. Dogs allowed on leash. There are signs warning of rattlesnakes and mountain lions -- so it's best hike to with a partner.
