Comments: The city of Helotes is located in the Texas Hill Country just northwest of San Antonio. Taking its name from an ancient creek that meanders through the area, Helotes is derived from the Spanish word elotes or corn-on-the cob. The site was originally occupied by Lipan Apaches, Tonkawas and Comanches, and later served as a stage coach stop between San Antonio and Bandera. Helotes remained a farming community for many years and was incorporated in 1981. Old Town Helotes has many historic buildings. The John T. Floore County Store and dancehall opened in 1946 and remains a venue for top musical talent.
