Description: This event is on the western portion of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) which is considered one of the best rail trails in the nation; the entire 342K of the trail from Point State Park in Pittsburgh east to Cumberland, MD is sanctioned as an extended distance bike event. Start where you wish, bike east or west, and ride as far as you desire. If you want to do an out and back bike ride on the entire length of the trail, it is possible to do a 342K ride. Directions will be provided for a 13K and 25K bike ride starting from the West Newton GAP Trailhead. Trail heads are identified at

Start Point / Driving Directions: 111 Collinsburg Rd, West Newton, PA 15089 (724)872-5586 ***** From Interstate 70 take exit 43 onto PA-201N towards Donora. Turn right onto Rostrave Rd/PA-201. Veer right onto PA-136. Turn left onto Collinsburg Rd. Visitors Bureau is immediately on the left. Entire GAP.

Comments: Hours are Monday - Friday 11am - 4pm, Saturday - Sunday 10am - 3pm. Only open weekdays from November - March **** Call to confirm that they are open on holidays. ***** Alternate Start Point is at the Wyndham Grand, 600 Commonwealth Place, Pittsburgh, PA which is a short drive from the western terminus of the GAP at the Fountain in Point State Park. **** The West Newton Bicycle Shop rents bikes and is located next to the trailhead. ***** Bicycle helmets must be worn. ***** Most of the GAP has a firmly-packed crushed limestone surface,. Recommend you use a bicycle with a wider tire (i.e. hybrid or mountain bike rather than a road bike). The 17 miles between Pittsburgh and McKeesport has an asphalt surface. ***** There is a deli near the trailhead where a picnic lunch may be purchased. A 1K option if you visit the West Newton Historic Cemetery. NO FREE BIKING.
