Walk 3 "B" Award Event No. 93914 2013/Y1770

5/10K – Rated 1B
Hanover Junction to Glatfelters Station

Easy walk on the York Heritage Rail Trail from Hanover Junction access area North to Glatfelters Station access area and back. On June 27, 1863, Hanover Junction was defended by the 20th Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia under the command of by Lt. Col. William Sickles. He had spread his 200+ men in an arc to defend the approaches from the Hanover Branch Railroad and the Junction Road. About 2:00 PM, the 35th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry (The Comanches), under the command of Lt. Col. Elijah V. White advanced on Hanover Junction following the road and railroad tracks. White’s whooping, pistol-firing men galloped toward the stationhouse as Sickles’ line collapsed almost immediately. Terrified militiamen raced across the shallow valley eastward to their nearby hilltop fortifications. Some accounts suggest a single shot was fired from a small cannon that Sickles had placed in his works. The Confederates burned railcars, torched the round table and some small rail yard buildings, severed telegraph lines, and rode around Hanover Junction firing their pistols in celebration.
