Award

Choice of two ‘B’ awards is available. It is a full color embroidered patch similar to that shown on the front cover of this brochure. One award depicts the Custer Maple where, according to legend, Gen. George Armstrong Custer tied his horse on the day of the battle.  The tree was planted in 1860 by a local merchant who owned the building where M&T Bank now stands. His descendants fought with the borough to prevent the tree from being cut down. A star and four horseshoes mark the spot in the pavement where the tree once stood.  The other award is the one shown, below, of the Civil War Monument.

Trail Descriptions

The trail features the sites of the Battle of Hanover and is on sidewalks and alleyways throughout the Borough. Strollers: medium | Wheelchairs: Medium | Pets: Yes | Restrooms: Yes.  This event was rated a "1+" last year.

Brief History of Hanover

Hanover, PA, named for Hannover, Germany, and long famous for shoes, harness race horses and snack foods, is also today a shopping mecca for parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.
But it is the history and architecture which is the focus of our walk. Join us as we walk back through time viewing some of Hanover’s beautiful old churches and homes, including the "twin" mansions of the Sheppard and Myers families, one of which appears in the movie Girl Interrupted, co-starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. Our walk will pass through old cemeteries and sites from the "Battle of Hanover." That encounter between Union and Confederate forces on June 30th, 1863 was the first battle north of the Mason-Dixon Line. When it ended, 300 men had been killed, wounded or captured. It deprived Lee of his cavalry at a critical time, enabling the Union troops to seize and hold commanding positions at Gettysburg. If not for the events at Hanover, the battle at Gettysburg may very well have had a different outcome.
So come join us on our walk through history, snack on our famous chips and pretzels and if there’s time, shop till you drop.
