TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS
|
This walk follows city streets and goes through historic
and residential areas of the borough. Littlestown is one of the older towns
in Pennsylvania, dating back to 1734. It originally served as a stagecoach
stop on the road from Baltimore to Pittsburgh. More than 13,000 soldiers
spent the night in Littlestown on their way to the Battle of Hanover or the
Battle of Gettysburg. In the first week after the Battle of Gettysburg,
wounded Union soldiers were brought to Littlestown. Join us as we walk past
historic churches and buildings dating back to the early 1700's. The
borough sewer system was built as a WPA project in 1941. Clifton Earl
"Cliff" Heathcote (major league
ballplayer from 1918-1932) is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Strollers:

Every participant must register and carry a Start Card
while participating in the event. You may walk for free or Fee for Credit
is $3.00.

DIRECTIONS
|
Take PA 194 or PA 97 to the square in Littlestown. Take
PA 97 South 3/10 mile to E. Lakeview Drive. Turn left on E. Lakeview for
4/10 mile to YMCA at corner of E. Lakeview and Keystone Street.*******
Alternative Start: Take PA 194 or PA 97 to the
square in Littlestown. Turn onto E KING ST/PA-194. Sheetz
is .05 miles east of the square.
After registering at Sheetz, you will drive about 1 mile to the YMCA where
the walk starts. Obviously when the YMCA is closed, there are no restrooms
at the start. There are restrooms at Sheetz.
