CLUB: Volkssport Club of West Point

WELCOME: This event is a non-competitive walk sponsored by the Volkssport Club of West Point. It is open to everyone and is free if you do not want IVV credit. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

AWARD: No award.

FEES:
  • Fee for IVV credit is $3. The event may be walked a second time on this day with no additional fee.
  • Events are free to those who wish to participate without receiving IVV credit.
  • NOTE: Admission to the zoo is $1.00. This will be waived if you show your start card at the admissions booth.
TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS: The 10K trail goes first through the town of Fort Montgomery on sidewalks. Then we visit the Fort Montgomery Battle Site. You may choose to go back to Route 9W to walk on the sidewalks, OR, to walk on natural surfaces and go under the Bear Mountain Bridge. If you choose the natural surfaces, hiking boots and walking sticks are necessary. Finally, the trail goes into Bear Mountain State Park, visiting the animals in the Trailside Zoo. It is on paved paths through the park. Using the paved route, it is suitable for strollers (single width), but not wheelchairs. There will also be a 5 KM trail available which just goes through Fort Montgomery.

TRAIL RATING:
  • 1+ if you take the paved route.
  • 3+ if you take the natural trail through the woods.
  • NOTE: If there is a orange or red terrorist alert, we will not be allowed on the natural trail, which goes under the Bear Mountain Bridge.
  • Hiking boots and walking stick are needed for the natural trail.

START POINT LOCATION & HOURS: Holiday Inn Express, 1106 Route 9W Fort Montgomery, NY 10922 . Start times: between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, finish by 4 PM.

PRE-REGISTRATION: There is no pre-registration.

WATER & RESTROOMS: Water and Restrooms are available at the start/finish, at the Visitors Center in the Fort Montgomery Historic Battle Site and in Bear Mountain State Park.

DIRECTIONS:
From the North:
  • Take NY State Thruway I-87 to Exit 17 Newburgh.
  • Take I-84 East to Exit 10S.
  • Take 9W South.
  • The Holiday Inn Express is on the left hand side, as soon as you enter Fort Montgomery.
From the South:
  • Palisades Interstate Parkway North to its end (Bear Mountain traffic circle).
  • Follow signs for Route 9W north (3d exit off traffic circle).
  • Take 9W North. Hotel is 1.6 miles on the right.
From the East or West:
  • Take I-84 to exit 10S.
  • Take 9W South. Hotel is on the left hand side, as soon as you enter Fort Montgomery.

PARKING: Holiday Inn Express parking lot

PETS: Pets are NOT permitted in the Trailside Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park.

CONDITIONS: This event will be held regardless of weather conditions.
