Welcome to the December 2006 Electronic Newsletter of the Volkssport Club of West Point!

We organize our letter with the next month’s club events first, followed by new club information first, then “old” (previously published) club news that is still newsworthy , followed by other walking information, then a Calendar of Events

Next Group Walk:

Hyde Park YRE Group Walk THIS Saturday, Saturday, 9 December!  Club meeting at 9 AM, walking at 10:30 AM.

  •  (See Calendar below)

Next Club Events:

  • Annual Holiday Get-Together –Sunday December 10th is the date for our annual club get-together – if you’re on our list, you should have received a PERSONAL email from the club – seating is limited, so if you did not receive the PERSONAL email, please let us know immediately, else you can’t be seated!  Only those we’ve told the club will be attending can be seated do to capacity requirements!

For those of you on the invite list, make sure you leave time to go through security (especially since you’re probably driving!) as well as bring a government issued photoid as we always ask for anyone joining West Point walks or events.  You can’t get on the base without one for everyone in your party!

Also from Joan Kimmel, there is a free holiday concert open to the public on Sunday December 10th at
3 pm in Eisenhower Hall Theater.   The timing might be just right after our lunch for those attending, or for anyone else interested in attending just the holiday concert.   Check it out at : http://www.usma.edu/Band/schedule.htm ,

New Club News Appearing This Month for the first time!

Thanks to the Renewals and New Members!

Recently, we’ve received renewals and membership dues from the following last month:

  • Whoops!  No new members this month!  Those folks whose membership expires in the first half of 2007 will be receiving dues notices shortly!  We appreciate your support!

Thanks Joan!

When you receive your next issue of this electronic newsletter, you’ll note that Joan Kimmel is no longer President of the club.  As editor of this newsletter (this is Andrew typing!), Joan has been the President as long as I’ve been involved in Volkssporting – since late 1999.  She’s been an inspiration for the sport and a tremendous asset to our club.  I can’t think of a better ambassador for our great hobby.   Speaking as a member of the Board (Treasurer), I’d like to publicly thank Joan for her help and assistance both to me and the club over these (at least) 6 years.

Fortunately, as she’s the new secretary in 2007 (She and Nancy Patrick switched roles starting in 2007 you’ll remember), she won’t be going terribly far!

Yahoo! Group Created for our club!

We created a Yahoo! Group for our Volkssport Club in November.  For those familiar with Yahoo! Groups, it’s an online community where we can publish event calendars, post items of interest that can be automatically sent to your email ID, and the like.  We’d like ALL members of the club (and others as well!) to consider joining.

Details on how to join can be seen at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/volkssportclubofwestpoint

Previously Published Club News that is still relevant!

News from other Venues:

Interested in becoming the Northeast Regional Director (NERD) of the AVA?

Joan Lampart in the later part of November stated that if any one is thinking about running for the NERD position, please submit their name to her before January 15.  Her email address is: Jmlampart@aol.com

Vote for the top year-round walks of 2006

From Wendy:

Vote for the Top Year-Round Walk of 2006 for the USA.  Once again I would like to poll you for my completely unscientific "Top Year Round Walks of 2006" to be published at http://walking.about.com , hopefully to excite walkers to try our year-rounds and to buy "Starting Point."

To submit your vote: You may vote for 3 top walks nationwide.  Please do not vote for an YRE sponsored by your own club. All others are fair game. Any state, but only for US year-round walks.

Need:
City, State
YRE sanction number (so I can tell which walks are the same walks when
tallying the votes).
Brief description on why it is the best.
Email to: walking.guide@about.com

NOTE: I am looking for Year-Round or Seasonal Walks only, not regular weekend events.

Deadline:
Dec. 18, 2006

Current Calendar!

Please note that the Calendar of Events contains both confirmed and tentative dates of events.

These below are 'confirmed' times and dates!

We are sometime asked what a 'Group Walk' (as opposed to a Year Round Event (YRE) or Event) is - We credit our sister club in Albany, the ESCV (EMPIRE STATE CAPITAL VOLKSSPORTERS) for the following definition of GROUP walks: "Group Walk  means all meet and signup together at the same time,  get a map and start together, then you proceed at your own pace.  There are NO GUIDES for this kind of walk.. Nor does a group have to stay together. "; so when you see this term in our calendar below, you'll now know what it means!   We usually have fast walkers, slow walkers, and medium walkers,  there's almost always someone you can walk with if you join us for your first time in a GROUP WALK!

As always, changes from the previous month in
RED
