START POINT:  Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library, 717 Queen Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314

  HOURS:  Register between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Finish by 4:00 p.m.

  DISTANCE / TRAIL:  6 / 11 / 17 km, Rated 1+
This walk will offer volksmarchers an opportunity to earn IVV credit by walking both ways across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.  Those willing to walk the full 17 km "long trail" will also have the opportunity to explore the National Harbor development.  The 6 km (3.7-mile) trail will follow the riverfront of Old Town Alexandria to obtain fine views of the new bridge before returning directly to the Start/Finish Point.  The 11 km (6.8-mile) trail will include the riverfront and allow walkers to walk to the Maryland gateway park and back across the Wilson Bridge's wide, smooth walker/biker path.  The 17 km (10.6-mile) trail will allow walkers to continue into Maryland and explore the National Harbor development.  The trailmay be difficult for wheelchairs but likely will be suitable for strollers.  Water and restrooms will be available at the Start/Finish Point and at various locations in Old Town Alexandria and National Harbor.  They will not be available during the Wilson Bridge crossing.

FEES:  There is no commemorative award for this event.  The fee for IVV Credit is $3.00.  There is no fee to just walk the trail - but you must register and carry a start card.  No refunds will be given.

Each participant is issued a start card, which must be carried on the walk.  Only one start card per person is issued, and it must be turned in at the Finish table after completing the event.  Only those participants with a properly validated start card will be eligible for IVV Credit.  Each trail may be completed twice per start card on the same day at no additional cost, provided you complete the trail within the stated start/finish time.

Water is available at the Start/Finish point, and food and drink usually is available along the trail, but you should carry your own water on the walk in case of extreme weather or personal cases of dehydration.  Littering along the trails is prohibited.  The event will be held rain or shine.  Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed at all times and cleaned up after by their owner.  Dogs are not allowed inside the hotel.

DIRECTIONS:  From the East or West via I 95/I 495 (Capital Beltway): Take Exit 177B (US-1 North/Alexandria). Continue north on US-1 for about 10 blocks (0.8 miles) to Queen St. (2 blocks past King St.). Turn RIGHT on Queen St. for 2 1/2 blocks. The library will be on your left.

From the North via the George Washington Memorial Parkway: Take the GW Parkway into Old Town Alexandria. Continue on what now is called Washington St. for about 8 blocks from the first traffic signal at Slater's Lane to Princess St. Turn RIGHT on Princess St. You will be one block north of the library, which is on the far side of a large parking lot to your left.

Metrorail Access: Take either Blue or Yellow lines south into Alexandria to the King St. station. Exit the station and walk away from the tracks toward Old Town Alexandria. Walk east on King St. for about 12 blocks to Columbus St., which is two blocks past Patrick St. and one block before Washington St. Turn LEFT to walk two blocks to Queen St. The library is on the far right corner. You may also ride the free King Street trolley, which operates seven days a week from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM between the King St. Metro station and the riverfront. Buses operate on roughly 15- minute intervals and stop only at designated stops.

PARKING:  Look for parking spaces in legal spots along the streets, especially to the north and west of the S/F Point. Obey all parking signs, and provide proper payment for meters on Saturday. Do NOT park in private lots unless you have paid the proper fee and/or had explicit permission to park from the lot owner.

AVA SPECIAL PROGRAMS:  Because of the large number and inconsistent operation of special programs offered by the AVA and various clubs, this walk's organizers cannot be sure for which programs this walk might qualify.  We suspect it qualifies for the following programs: Historic Churches.  Because the satisfaction of walkers is our foremost desire, we will stamp any special program book that a walker feels is appropriate for this event.  We urge special program organizers to also place the highest-possible value on the satisfaction of walkers involved in their programs.

FACILITIES, AMENITIES & STIPULATIONS:  Restrooms and water will be available at the start point and at locations along the trail.  Food also can be purchased at a number of restaurants and fast-food establishments along the trails.

Everyone is welcome.  Participants may walk, jog, or run.  An adult must accompany children under 12.  Pets are allowed on the trails but not in buildings.  The city of Alexandria has leash and pet clean-up laws.
