TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS:
Walk: Sandwich, the oldest town on Cape Cod, became the site of one of America’s largest glass factories which flourished during the 19 th century. The town was also the home of Thornton W. Burgess, naturalist and author of children’s stories (Peter Cottontail). The route passes Heritage Plantation, 76 acres of landscaped grounds with a spectacular spring rhododendron display, a gorgeous working carousel, and an antique car museum. The route also encompasses the Glass Museum show-casing glass from the 1825 to 1888 period, a Doll Museum, antique shops, and unique Bed and Breakfast accommodations. A boardwalk crossing a saltmarsh provides a breath-taking view of Cape Cod Bay. The route is flat and mostly paved with an AVA rating of 1.5, suitable for strollers, but not wheelchairs.
Bike: the entire route is on the paved Cape Cod Canal Recreation Trail, passing a vertical plate railroad lift bridge, the Aptucxet Trading Post, and the Bourne and Sagamore bridges
