TRAIL DESCRIPTION: This 10km (6.2 miles) walk— voted #8 in AVA’s Top Ten YREs in 2002 — shows off Providence’s 350 years of vibrant history with carefully restored neighborhoods, a revitalized downtown and tree-lined cobblestone walkways.

Your route includes: the Roger Williams National Memorial, the site of the original Providence settlement in 1636; the Rhode Island State House, considered one of the most beautiful capitols in America; Waterplace Park, a 4-acre urban park surrounding a tidal basin featuring landscaped terraces, walkways and a water taxi; Brown University, the 7th oldest Ivy League University in the nation; Benefit Street, a “mile of history” with an impressive concentration of original, privately owned colonial homes; and Prospect Terrace, a photographer’s delight with a breath-taking panorama of the city and countryside beyond. Some cobblestone walkways and short hills give this walk an AVA rating of 2, difficult for strollers and not suitable for wheelchairs.

DIRECTIONS: The Roger Williams National Memorial Visitor Center is located at 282 North Main St. at the corners of North Main, Smith and Canal Streets.
