What's a Volksmarch?
A volksmarch, literally translated "people's walk," is a leisurely walk through a scenic, historic, or interesting area over a pre-determined route. Walks are non-competitive and participants proceed at their own pace.
Other volkssports include bicycling, swimming and cross-country skiing.
The goal of volkssports is to promote physical
fitness and good health by encouraging all people, regardless of age, race, color, creed
or economic status, to exercise in a stress-free environment.

Events are offered at different times of the year and are sponsored by local clubs. Clubs
determine a specific, measured route, and create a map and/or directions. A
"standard" length volksmarch is 10k (6.2 miles), but many single-day events now
offer a 5k (3.2 mile) option for those who choose. A typical bicyling event is 25k.
Single-day events have a specific start time, for example 9 am - 1 pm, and participants have a few hours to finish the route.
YRE stands for "year-round event," which means people may participate any day during the year, and as many times as they choose.
A "seasonal" event is open during a
specific time of year, for example April 1 through November 30.
What does it cost?
Anyone may participate in volkssports, free of
charge. Each participant is required to complete and carry a "start card," which
is a means of keeping track of participants. Start cards are also marked at
"checkpoints" along the route. A fee is charged for participants who wish to be
part of the AVA/IVV awards program, or to receive an "event award," a patch, pin
or other item commemorating the event.

The Volkssport movement began in southern Germany
in the 1960s. In 1968, the International Volkssport Verband
(IVV) was formed in West Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The IVV has
continued to grow and now includes more than 25 countries worldwide. Volkssports were
brought to the United States as part of the nation's Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. The
American Volkssport Association (AVA) became part of the IVV in 1979 and now sponsors more
than 550 clubs throughout the U.S.
