Volunteer Opportunities

We understand that when one is asked to volunteer, the tasks seem to be never-ending. Not true with the following opportunities! These tasks are all related to sharing AVA’s message of Fun, Fitness and Friendship within your own community and can usually be done by one person at his or her own pace. No meetings, either – just an occasional email update to a national project coordinator.

If you are interested, contact either Curt Myron at president@ava.org or Jacklyn Wilson at jackie@ava.org

1. AVA Clubs in Schools.

Are you an active or former educator as well as a volkssporter? If so, why not act as AVA point of contact with your local elementary, middle or high school to promote AVA clubs in schools. AVA already has written material available to inform local schools, and AVA HQ has resources to coach you in making contact.

Our model school is the Ar-We-Va School in Westside, Iowa, where the business manager and faculty are club advisors and the students are the club members. The Ar-We-Va club, called the Rambling Rockets, holds several events per year including self-guided year-round events which help to make the club financially self-sufficient.

2. College Level Course in Volkssporting. Another opportunity for college educators and administrators. Several community colleges now have accredited physical education courses based upon volkssporting events. Most are one-hour pass-fail PE courses, which cost the college little beyond the instructor’s services. AVA has sample course outlines and training plans; also some qualified instructors willing to provide advice. All materials are provided by AVA; we just need you and your contacts. So far, there has been interest in this program from several states, including Washington, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, Georgia and Florida, but we’d like even more.

3. AVA Clubs on Military Bases. If you are an employee at a military installation, or assigned/retired military with ties to a particular base, volkssport is an excellent opportunity to promote community relations, maintain fitness and support our military heroes. One knowledgable volunteer at each base is all it takes to promote AVA. Volkssporting material is already printed for you to share with base/post recreation and welfare offices. And like the school programs, forming an AVA club is low cost/no cost solution.

4. AVA Museum Volunteer. This is an opportunity for someone in the San Antonio/Universal City area, near AVA HQ. A volunteer is needed to complete sorting and cataloging volkssport awards donated to AVA over the years. So far, awards have been sorted by year but need to be put in some logical display order. Some awards need to be grouped together to make a framed display. Some items just need a good cleaning.

If you are interested and can volunteer even once or twice a month, please contact Jacklyn Wilson at jackie@ava.org
