General Meeting is February 10

instead of February 17 due to it

being Ash Wednesday

From the President, Ron Nelson

So far this year the weather has been a little of this and a little of that. We had our first group walk on January 9 and we had some good luck- weather was sunny, and some bad luck- the temperature was in the 20’s.  This kept the attendance to only 7, but we enjoyed the walk.  Our second walk was Collegeville. All good luck on this walk.  The temperature was in the 40’s and it felt more like spring than mid-winter. We had 20 walkers show up, including one new member. It was a great day for a walk.

Please Note: The Super Fresh start point for Collegeville is closing. Dave and Joan Brown are looking for a new location.  If you plan on doing the Collegeville walk in the next few weeks call the Browns @ 610-489-1138.  They have the box.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Marian Walsh for her service to the club as Point of Contact for Valley Forge and Bus Trip Coordinator. With some new interests, including volunteering at Longwood Gardens she felt it best to resign as POC. Ellie Kuntz is replacing her as POC, and Joyce Deibert is the new Trip Coordinator with Carol Rautenstrauch

Carol Rautenstrauch and Joyce Diebert have been busy planning a 3 day bus trip.  They have scheduled a trip for September 10-12 to the Finger Lakes Region.

The bi-annual Atlantic Region will be held in Annapolis MD on March 19 – 21.  These mini conventions are a lot of fun and a good

opportunity to find out what is going on in the region,  The brochure for the convention can be found by going to our club webpage (www.ava.org/clubs/libertybellwanderers) and clicking the link to Atlantic Region Schedule. On the Atlantic Region Welcome page click on "Click Here for brochure" in the Mark Your Calendar paragraph.  If you do not have internet access give me a call and I will mail you a brochure.

I have submitted a sanction request for a walk in West Chester on May 15.  This is a town with a long history and has preserved and placed over 4000 buildings on the National Register. In addition to all the historic houses and buildings the walk will include a portion of West Chester University campus, 2 parks and some newer residential areas.

Mark your calendars with the above dates of these upcoming walks.

Finger Lakes Here We Come!

Set aside the weekend of September 10 – 12, for our LBW trip to the Finger Lakes in New York State. We’ll be walking in Cooperstown, and have an opportunity to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Our Saturday walk will be at Watkins Glen, a level 3 rated walk because of the 800+ steps to the top. There will be a visit to a winery, possibly two, and the opportunity to visit the Corning Museum of Glass. Our third walk will be in Ithaca (where we’ll stay during our trip), through the Cornell University campus. Watch for the registration form in the March newsletter.

Carol Rautenstrauch and Joyce Deibert, Trip Coordinators

Idita-Walk: by Carol Rautenstrauch

There’s still time to register for the Idita-Walk, which begins February 1. The Idita-Walk is an event to promote physical fitness in the spirit of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.  The Iditarod Sled dog race is 1049 miles long from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska.  To complete the Idita-Walk, simply walk 30 minutes a day for 35 days between February 1, 2010 to March 31, 2010 for a total of 1049 minutes (any combination of minutes will work - just reach 1049 during the 59 day event!).  Twelve of our LBW members have already accepted the challenge to complete the 1049 minutes.

The registration fee is $10.00 and all proceeds go to the Camp Bronson maintenance, scholarships and numerous youth related programs. The camp is on the banks of the pristine Salmon Lake 35 miles north of Nome. The old Quonset hut cabin was demolished and replaced by a new 16' x 24' cabin. It was built in Nome by a local contractor and moved by truck to Salmon Lake. It is used by Boy Scouts and other youth organizations with outdoor activities that have the same outdoor ideals as the scouts.

You can register on their website: http://www.idita-walk.com/idw/Index.asp
