In 1983 and 1984 the Holy Family Catholic Church conducted one volksmarch per year. Since the church had no AVA chartered club, the Oklahoma Striders (a chartered club in AVA), sponsored these events, which were called the St. George Walks (St. George is the patron saint of wanderers) and were conducted in early spring starting from the church. The trails went through west Lawton.

Under the direction of Father James Stafford, pastor, the Holy Family Walkers was formed 20 October 1985 as a chartered club in the AVA with the number AVA-316. Their first event as a club was in April 1986. Mr. George J. Snyder was appointed as the first president and reigns today.
