Walking Tour

10Km Walk (2008 -Y1168)

Start Location: Smithfield Station 415 South Church Street, Smithfield, Virginia   (757) 357-7700

Start / Finish Times: Smithfield Station is open daily. Walk during daylight hours.

Special Classifications: Authors and Literary Landmarks, Cemetery Stroll, College Campus, Courthouse in the USA,  Railroad Heritage, Riverwalk America, Walking Europe in the USA and Walk the USA, A-Z.

Fees: There is no fee to walk the trail. This is a credit only event. The fee for IVV credit will be $3. B Awards maybe available.

Facilities: There are restrooms and water available at the start/finish point. Food, drinks, and restrooms are available at various establishments along the route.

Course Description: The trail is rated 1. The route is mostly level, the trail follows city streets through historic Smithfield.  Some portion of the walk does not have sidewalks. The trail is difficult in some sections for handicap access. Strollers and leashed pets should be OK.

Highlights: View an eclectic mixture of architectural styles in historic and modern neighborhoods, walk past various famous ham processing plants and along the Pagan River. 

Directions: Smithfield Station is located on 415 South Church Street (Business 10).     From Maryland, Washington, DC and Richmond: Take I-95 south to State Route 10. Take Route 10 east through Hopewell (approximately 7 miles), and continue on Route 10 another 55 miles, through the Town of Surry to the Route 10 Bypass around Smithfield. Take the bypass around the town, until you see the elevated water tank. Turn left on Business 10, at the stoplight. Follow Business 10 approximately 2 miles. The Smithfield Station will be on the right, just after crossing the Cypress Creek Bridge.  Park on either side of Business 10.  From Southside Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Chesapeake, etc.):  Take Route 17 west from Portsmouth towards the James River Bridge (follow the yellow and green targets from I-64), going past I-664.  Travel about 10 miles and turn left towards Smithfield, at the stoplight at the intersection with U.S. Route 258/State Route 32.  Turn right at the intersection with Route 10 (about 2.5 miles).  Follow Route 10 west to the intersection with Business 10 (at the elevated water tank).  Turn right, and follow the directions as above.  From the Peninsula:  Take the James River Bridge (Route 17) south from Newport News.  Follow Route 17 to intersection with Routes 258/32.  Turn right, and follow the directions for "From Southside…” above.
