Fees: There is no fee to bike the trail. This is a credit only event. The fee
for IVV credit will be $3.
Facilities: There are restrooms (pot-a-potty) available at the
trail head start/finish point.
Course Description: The trails are rated 1. The route utilizes bike paths
in the newly developed city park.
Bikers should wear a helmet and carry water.
Highlights: The Dismal Swamp Canal
Trail is a hard surface multi-use trail that is parallel to the Dismal Swamp
Canal. The canal is part of the Intercostal Waterway. Along the trail you may
see some of the following wild life: Bobcats, Bears, Snakes, Deer, Birds, Fox,
Butterfly, Opossums, and Raccoons. Boat traffic along the canal can be viewed
from various points.
Directions: From I-64 West, take Exit
291B Dominion Blvd. /Route 17 South, towards Elizabeth City. From I-64 East take Exit
292 Route 190/Route 17 South. Follow Route 17 South approximately 2.5 miles to
the steel bridge over the Inter Costal Water Way. Continue approximately
.6.mile to the next traffic light at the intersection of Dominion Blvd, Cedar Road and Moses Grandy Trail.
Turn Left onto Cedar Road. The registration point is
at Johnson Hardware located on the right side of Cedar Road after the turn. Please do
not park immediately in front of the store, but park to the side of the lot.
The customers who use this store will appreciate your courtesy, as will the
proprietors. Ask for the Bike Box. After registering for the Bike you will be
driving to the Start Point at the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. From Johnson Hardware, turn left on Dominion Blvd. /Route 17 South. Travel
approximately 3.7 miles to George Washington Highway (Business Route 17). Look
for brown sign, Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. Turn Right on George Washington Highway; travel approximately .6
mile, Turn Left at sign for Dismal Swamp Canal Trail parking.
