You may recall
that tragedy struck the Empire State Capital
Volkssporters (ESCV) club, as well as the whole AVA
walking community, on August10, 2011. A runaway car struck down
and killed three of the club's members at St. Matthew's
Church in Voorheesville, New York, a neighboring
community of our State’s
capital. It was just prior to the start of one of many
of our sanctioned Wednesday traditional walks. As
a result of this horrific event, messages of condolences
were received from our sister clubs' colleagues from
across the country and Canada. In those messages, as
well as in personal conversations, many indicated a
desire to be kept informed regarding the establishment
of a memorial for the three women,
Rosemarie Hume, Carol Lansing and Frances Pallozzi,
so that other clubs could join us in expressing their
sympathies through a tangible
memorial.
As ESCV President,
I appointed a four-member memorial committee to
explore a range of appropriate
tributes that would have a lasting memory of these three
friends and demonstrate their love of our popular
sport, walking. It is planned to place
a signature brick in each woman's local church and a
plaque at the site of the accident, St. Matthew's
Church. All of these elements are presently moving through the
conceptual process. Upon approval, installation will
commence.
If you would like
to make a gift to this initiative, ESCV has created a
separate memorial account exclusively
for this purpose. Make donations payable to ESCV — Memorial
Fund, and sent to Memorial Committee, ESCV, PO Box 5464,
Clifton Park, NY 12065.
When the various components of
the project are completed, an update to all will
be provided through TAW. We, in ESCV, so appreciate the
caring demonstrated by our
walking colleagues from so many places, and the
interest expressed by so many to be part
of our efforts to honor our three deceased members.
