Background: The village of Northville is located in Fulton County in the town of Northampton.  It is within the boundaries of the Adirondack Park.  The first permanent settlements took place in the late 1780’s when Zadoc Sherwood and Samuel Olmstead (you will walk by his grave located on South Main Street in the old cemetery) went up the Sacandaga River from Fish House in a canoe.  A short way south of the present village of Northville, they each built a primitive shelter.
        Main Street
was surveyed and laid out in 1797.  In 1807 only six families lived along Main Street.  The village was incorporated in 1873.
At first, the small community was devoted entirely to agriculture.  The many streams provided power for grist and sawmills.  Blacksmiths, harness-makers, carpenters and carriage-makers were other businesses also found here.

On the west bank of the Sacandaga River just south of Northville, there used to be a Methodist Camp Meeting Ground.  The railroad finally came to this area bringing lots of tourists to visit Northville.  When a German Society hired a train car to bring in barrels of lager beer, the Methodists were infuriated and decided to move to Round Lake.
The Methodist Camp Meeting Ground along with another 18 acres became known as Sacandaga Park.  It was nicknamed the “Coney Island of the North”.  Aside from the golf course, very little remains of Sacandaga Park today.  The creation of the reservoir was directly to blame for the “death” of the park.
Because of its location along the Great Sacandaga Lake, wonderful activities make this picturesque community a popular year round destination point.  Facilities for tourists are steadily expanding and now include several fine restaurants, a golf course and bed & breakfasts.  You will also find many arts and craft shops as well as antique shops.  Enjoy your stay in this charming and historic Adirondack village on the Great Sacandaga Lake!
