History Highlights:
Though part of the
Town of
Bennington, North Bennington is a chartered village that maintains its
own
identity. A classic small New England village, North Bennington has a
population of 1428 (2000 census). Within its 2.1 square miles it has
industries, a bank, two schools, four churches, Vermont’s
oldest fire company,
a prestigious liberal arts college (Bennington College) and the
Park-McCullough
House, an outstanding example of Victorian architecture and home to an
extensive collection of artwork, furniture, artifacts and Vermont
historical
items collected over the 100 years the home was occupied by the
Park-McCullough
family. The family included two Governors of Vermont and played host to
President
Benjamin Harrison and his entourage at the house when Harrison came to
Bennington to dedicate the battle monument.
The Park McCullough
House
serves as the start point for a walk that will take you through a
wooded trail,
down a dirt country road to a covered bridge over the Walloomsac River,
alongside Paran Creek, site of industrial activity since Revolutionary
times
and still in use for this purpose today, and through the center of the
village.
There you can buy lunch at a store that has operated continuously in
the same
building since 1833. The Park McCullough House will be open for tours
after
your walk (fee charged).
