TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS: Downtown walk passes historic homes, churches and a shipbuilding site (Gildersleeve). The Connecticut River, which flows along the town's entire western and southern borders, has contributed significantly to the rich historical heritage as well as to the social and economic development of Portland. Brownstone quarrying, shipbuilding, and tobacco farming were the oldest industries in Portland. Today, this small New England town is home to 9,500 residents.
