TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS: Incorporated in 1645, Farmington is one of the most attractive towns in Connecticut. Following the 1839 revolt aboard the Amistad slave ship and the 1841 trial giving the slaves their freedom by the U.S. Supreme Court, all 32 surviving men and four children were brought to Farmington by three abolitionists who sponsored them. For eight months, the Amistad survivors lived, worshiped, and were schooled in the village before their return to Africa. In addition to Amistad historic sites and fine 17th and 18th century architecture, the two trails (“freedom” and “nature”) include Miss Porter’s prep school, the Hill-Stead Museum, the Stanley-Whitman Museum (exhibits of early colonial life), and a 17th century gristmill on the Farmington River. The Hill-Stead houses a famous collection of impressionist paintings and was once the home of Theodate Pope, one of America’s first female architects and survivor of the Lusitania sinking.
