Trackers' Talk
November/December, 2009 - By Phyllis Gall,

Please print out this list of events and mark them on your
calendars. All the clubs appreciate your support to keep these events going.
Since we are not having meetings every month, I hope that you will try to attend
some of these other events. Our Wednesday group is meeting at 8:30 am at Metro
North Parking Lot. Check out our schedule below. Missy McBride has been
leading some Saturday group walks at our Year-Rounds and notifying members by
e-mail. All are welcome to any of these walks.
If you have any suggestions or comments to improve
our club or new activities, please feel free to talk to any of us.

A special thanks to Missy McBride who has been
arranging some Saturday walks at the various year-round events. They have been
a lot of fun. Watch for e-mails from her about more of these
walks.
Weston Bend State Park Two-walk Event on
September 26th & Annual Camping Trip: That was really a fun event
for all. We had nine campers with 25 people attending the Friday-night
potluck. We had so many the Park Ranger had to run some of them off. The walk
was held on Saturday morning after much rain and trails were slick in places.
We still had 89 walkers. Thanks to all that helped make this a success,
especially Dave and Laura Andersen that led a guided walk. We all enjoyed the
brats and chips cooked by Charlie and Elaine Gilbert. Then, there was another
scenic walk sponsored by the Kansas Jay Walkers. This was truly a fun-filled
weekend. Thanks to Mary Kemp for scheduling the workers. I know she worked
very hard to get all the spots filled.
Winterset, Iowa Walk: We had 30
people at Winterset that weekend. It was a lot of fun and we all enjoyed seeing
the "Covered Bridges of Madison County." We will have to plan another event
like that next year. Suggestions are always welcome.
Clay-Platte Trackers Lights on the Plaza
Event: This is usually our biggest event and takes a lot of people to
put it on. Barb Buehrer should be given special thanks for chairing this event
for the last few years. I am sure she appreciates a positive answer when she
calls for help. We also want you to all get out and walk that day or the
Worker's walk on November 21st. Start point is All Soul's Unitarian
Universalist Church, 4501 Walnut, Kansas City, MO. You may start anytime
between 3:00 and 5:30 pm, finish by 8:00. Drinks and cookies will be provided.
Directions from the north: Take I-35 exit 1A, turn left onto ramp to Southwest
Trfy.. Keep straight onto Southwest Trfy. Turn left on W. 43rd St. Turn right
onto Main St. Turn left onto E 45th St. There will be a group walk led by Dave
& Laura Andersen starting promptly at 3:30 pm.
Club Christmas Party: We have
been invited to Carol and Billy Herdmans for our annual Christmas Party so mark
your calendars for Sunday, December 6th starting at 6 pm. Carol will cook the
meat and club will pay for the meat. Drinks and table service will be
provided. We would like a response by the November meeting (Nov. 17th) if you
are attending and what you would like to bring. Salads, vegetables or desert
are requested. If you will not be at the meeting call Carol @ 816-435-0062 or
Phyllis @ 816-468-6012.
A VOLKSWALKING CLASS
Barb Buehrer and Laura Anderson will be teaching a
Communiversity class entitled “VOLKSWALKING: WALK FOR FUN, FITNESS, AND
FELLOWSHIP.” The class will be offered Saturday, Nov. 14, Room 202, Royal Hall
on the UMKC campus, at 10:00 AM. If interested you may register Online through
the Communiversity’s web site at a cost of $9.00. Class members will be given
the option of doing the group walk at the Lights on the Plaza Walk, Dec. 5.
Check with Barb on the status of this class.
2010 Walk Dates: May 1, September
25 and December 4 will be the dates for our Club Events. Suggestions are
welcome for places to hold these walks. The December 4th will be the Lights on
the Plaza Walk again and Berkley Park along the riverfront has been tentatively
scheduled for the September 25th walk. We have been asked by the Backwoods
Sporting Goods Store in Overland Park to talk about Volkswalking and they may be
receptive to our starting a walk from the store and walking on nearby
trails.
