TRAIL DESCRIPTION |
Hike a portion of the Nature Conservancy's Whitney Preserve. The path will be 6.2 miles (10k) with an elevation change of about 670 feet starting at the Guest House. The hike will take you out of Lindsley/Payne Canyon to the ridge top, where you will get great views of the "Horseshoe Bend"- the southern tip of the hogback ridge that surrounds the Black Hills. It will include a nice view of Lindsley Canyon, a look at the edge of the 2007 Alabaugh fire, a peek at a small spring, a walk near Cascade Creek, and then back to the starting point. The walk includes walking along two track roads, old fire roads, and undeveloped paths. |

DIRECTIONS |
Turn south on Hwy 71 (Cascade Road) from the US Rte 18 truck bypass in Hot Springs SD (there is a Holiday Inn Express on the corner). After driving about 8.2 miles south of Hot Springs (go beyond the FS Cascade Springs picnic grounds) and immediately west of the sandstone bank building on the south side of the road turn north on a gravel driveway. This driveway "Y"'s immediately, take the fork to the left, down to Cascade Creek. After about 0.1 miles, the road "Y"'s again, take the fork to the right and drive another 0.3 miles to the guest house. Watch for TNC arrow signs after the FS Cascade Springs picnic grounds. |
