TRAIL DESCRIPTION

.The trail takes participants through a ponderosa forest with open grassy meadows and canyon like environments.  It also treks through a scarred landscape from the Jasper Fire of 2000, the largest wildfire in South Dakota recorded history.  Wildlife sightings are common and the western Black Hills are considered a birder's paradise.  

EVENT INFORMATION

Due to steep inclines, this trail is considered moderate to strenuous.  Participants are encouraged to wear boots or sturdy shoes, as well as furnish their own drinking water.  Limited concessions are on site; the nearby community of Custer,SD and Newcastle, WY offer supplies for interested participants.  Visit www.nps.gov/jeca for more info.

DIRECTIONS

Jewel Cave National Monument is located approx. 13 miles west of Custer, SD or 24 miles east of Newcastle, WY.  Follow Highway 16 from either gateway community; the park entrance is located on the south side of the roadway.
