TRAIL DESCRIPTION

Trail is used as ski trails during the winter.  At the 7153' peak is a fire tower, one of the principal towers in the area and offers breathtaking views, along with the views from the Grand Vista Overview.  Beginning at the southern end, hikers ascend 1,000 feet in about 2 miles to Bear Mountain .

EVENT INFORMATION

Bear Mountain is the third highest point in the state and is the center of an uplift of Archean-age granite and gneiss, some of the oldest rocks in the Black Hills.  The trail winds through draws, pass through pine and spruce forests, skirts stands of aspen and travel a limestone rim.  Wildlife is abundant in the area.  According to Bear Mountain trail personnel elk and deer abound; coyotes, grouse and wild turkeys are sometimes glimpsed.

DIRECTIONS

The trails accessed from Medicine Mountain Boy Scout Camp which is located southwest of Hill City and northwest of the town of Custer.  Signs pointing you in the right direction for the camp are found on US 16 across from Heritage Village south of Crazy Horse Memorial. Take Medicine Mountain Road, stay to the right for approximately 4 to 5 miles, then follow Forest Road 299 north for 3 to 4 miles to the Boy Scout Camp.  Look for the signs
