Volkssport Club of West Point e-NEWS

November 2006

Welcome to the November 2006 Electronic Newsletter of the Volkssport Club of West Point!

We’re a few days later this month due to your editor’s being out of town at Virginia Beach – walking, amongst other locations, Colonial Williamsburg, albeit not a AVA walk!

We organize our letter with the next month’s club events first, followed by new club information first, then “old” (previously published) club news that is still newsworthy , followed by other walking information, then a Calendar of Events

Next Group Walk:

Cornwall on Hudson YRE Group Walk - Sunday, 19 November

  •  (See Calendar below)

Next Club Events:

  • Annual Holiday Get-Together – As mentioned last month, Sunday December 10th is looking like the date for our annual club get-together – we’re tentatively planning a luncheon this year.  Mark your calendars as TENTATIVE for this date!

If you are interested in attending, please send us a note at our email address QUICKLY so we can get a feel for how many people are interested in attending.  If we do not have enough people for a private room, we will meet on an ad-hoc basis – but please let us know!  This is NOT a commitment at the moment.

New Club News Appearing This Month for the first time!

Atlantic Walks

Club President Joan Kimmel provided the attached doc file of some (but not all, specifically the far western NY walks) walks in the general NY and Northeast region.   As always, thanks Joan!

Check the club’s website and/or point of contact to ensure your walk of interest is still valid!

Next Year’s Idea for a Great Halloween Walk!

Next year, anyone looking for a great Halloween walk, should head to Rehoboth Beach, DE for the Sea Witch Festival.  The volkswalk has been held in conjunction with this festival for a number of years. The walk this year drew 87 walkers. Probably more would have come had there not been a raging rainstorm the previous night and into the morning start time of 0800. However, by 0930 the sky was clearing and the remainder of the day was beautiful, sunny and clear.

We were joined on the trail by three other couples that were friends from previous Tater Tours. The walk goes through some lovely sections of the town of Rehoboth Beach and down the main street where everyone was gathering for the big Halloween parade.  We caught up with more Tater friends at the parade. The next day was the costumed dog parade which we had to miss.

Following the children's parade Farrell and I headed to Chincoteague, Virginia for an event walk on Sunday. This was our first visit to Assateague Island and the wildlife refuge area. There were both 5 km and 10 km trails and a lighthouse for those in that program. The walk was delightful. We saw many kinds of birds and deer. Binoculars are highly recommended for this trail. We didn't see any of the wild ponies from the trail but saw several that had been purchased at the auction and were on view.

We were so taken with the beauty of this area that we are seriously planning to return next July for the pony swim, the gallop down Main Street of Chincoteague, followed by the auction of foals.

Election Results for 2007:

As previously written, members of the club who appeared in person at the Octoberfest at Round Pond voted for club officers for 2007.  The following were elected:

  • President – Nancy Patrick
  • Vice President – Farrell Patrick
  • Secretary – Joan Kimmel
  • Treasurer – Andrew Schmidt

In our October newsletter, we inadvertently got some typos injected in the list above for Nancy’s and Farrell’s name – a thousand apologies!  (Moral of the story – computers and word processors make misteaks (sic))

Thanks to the Renewals and New Members!

Recently, we’ve received renewals and membership dues from the following last month:

  • Carol Hollar
  • The Klosky Family
  • Bill & Linda Machonis

Previously Published Club News that is still relevant!

What do you like?

Now that we’ve been writing these newsletters on a monthly basis for a few years now, and have it down to a relative science, time to ask you, the members, what would you like to see in them?  Is there any information that is lacking (local news, AVA news, walking news, whatever), or other suggestions for improvement? Feel free to send your comments along to the Editor at our email address volkssportclubofwestpoint@hotmail.com.

Current Calendar!

Please note that the Calendar of Events contains both confirmed and tentative dates of events.

These below are 'confirmed' times and dates!

We are sometime asked what a 'Group Walk' (as opposed to a Year Round Event (YRE) or Event) is - We credit our sister club in Albany, the ESCV (EMPIRE STATE CAPITAL VOLKSSPORTERS) for the following definition of GROUP walks: "Group Walk  means all meet and signup together at the same time,  get a map and start together, then you proceed at your own pace.  There are NO GUIDES for this kind of walk.. Nor does a group have to stay together. "; so when you see this term in our calendar below, you'll now know what it means!   We usually have fast walkers, slow walkers, and medium walkers,  there's almost always someone you can walk with if you join us for your first time in a GROUP WALK!

As always, changes from the previous month in
