Volkssport Club of West Point e-NEWS

October 2006

Welcome to the October 2006 Electronic Newsletter of the Volkssport Club of West Point!

We organize our letter with the next month’s club events first, followed by new club information first, then “old” (previously published) club news that is still newsworthy , followed by other walking information, then a Calendar of Events

Next Group Walk:

  • Highland Falls YRE Group Walk - Saturday, 14 October (See Calendar below)

Next Club Events:

  • Annual Holiday Get-Together - December 10th is looking like the tentative date for our annual club get-together – we’re tentatively planning a luncheon this year.  Mark your calendars as TENTATIVE for this date!  As always, family members and friends are more than welcomed at our Holiday Party.  We might, depending on the location, require advance reservations this year (along with advance payment), so “stay tuned”.

New Club News Appearing This Month for the first time!

Election Results for 2007:

As previously written, members of the club who appeared in person at the Octoberfest last week at Round Pond voted for club officers for 2007.  The following were elected:

  • President – Nancy Farrell
  • Vice President – Patrick Farrell
  • Secretary – Joan Kimmel
  • Treasurer – Andrew Schmidt

Essentially, you’ll notice that Joan and Nancy ‘swapped’ jobs.  Congratulations to the winners!   As we solicited many times, with few takers, the club only runs with volunteers, so in the summer of 2007 when we do elections again, we hope you’ll consider stepping up to the plate!

Going to Sacramento AVA Bi-annual Convention in June 2007?

Make your hotel reservations now!!  The convention hotel has limited openings available we’ve heard, so if you plan to go to the Sacramento AVA convention, make your reservations ASAP!

Thanks for the help!

We thank club members Tom Scuccimarra for creating the Cold Spring trail (first time we used it) and Peggy Goetz for creating the Nyack trail and assisting in the recurring Nyack event which we do yearly.  Both of these trails were used in Events that the club ran last month in September – the Nyack trail was held on the Nyack Street Fair Day on September 10th, and Cold Spring on the Hudson River Valley Ramble Day on September 17th.  It’s club members that help like Tom and Peggy to bring to us new trails for us to use in club sponsored, AVA-sanctioned Events.  If you have a favorite area you’d like to help map a trail for, let one of the club officers know and we’ll be happy to assist in providing an event on your favorite trail.

Members Walking News:

Club Secretary Nancy Patrick wrote to us “from the road” that “A couple, who are members of our club, David and Eileen Skinner (Clifton Park, NY) are on the Tater Tour with us. They walked their 50th state walk today in Nashville, TN”.  Congrats David and Eileen!  You’ll also note both of them renewed their membership in our club in September as well.  Both Dave and Eileen are officers of our sister club in Albany, ESCV (Empire State Capital Volkssporters).

Thanks to the Renewals and New Members!

Recently, we’ve received renewals and membership dues from the following last month:

  • William & Marianne Hegedus
  • Lisa Mowery
  • David & Eileen Skinner
  • Edward G. Choma
  • Tom & Patricia Carano

Ramble 2007:

The Hudson River Valley Ramble for 2007 will be held on September 15-16 and September 22-23.   Mark these dates down on your calendar – our club will most likely run an event on one of these weekends (usually the first of the two) as we always do.  We had a good turnout this past month at the Cold Spring event, so most likely we’ll “re-run” that event like we’ve done in the past with Rambles events (such as Poughkeepsie in 2004 and 2005).

What Would You Like in these Newsletters?

Now that we’ve been writing these newsletters on a monthly basis for a few years now, and have it down to a relative science, time to ask you, the members, what would you like to see in them?  Is there any information that is lacking (local news, AVA news, walking news, whatever), or other suggestions for improvement? Feel free to send your comments along to the Editor at our email address volkssportclubofwestpoint@hotmail.com.

These Newsletters Available Online!

Did you know that both these monthly newsletters as well as the minutes of our club meetings are available online for your reference?  Bookmark the club’s website below so you have access to the dates and goings-on at our club whenever you need to check something out!

Current Calendar!

Please note that the Calendar of Events contains both confirmed and tentative dates of events.

These below are 'confirmed' times and dates!

We are sometime asked what a 'Group Walk' (as opposed to a Year Round Event (YRE) or Event) is - We credit our sister club in Albany, the ESCV (EMPIRE STATE CAPITAL VOLKSSPORTERS) for the following definition of GROUP walks: "Group Walk  means all meet and signup together at the same time,  get a map and start together, then you proceed at your own pace.  There are NO GUIDES for this kind of walk.. Nor does a group have to stay together. "; so when you see this term in our calendar below, you'll now know what it means!   We usually have fast walkers, slow walkers, and medium walkers,  there's almost always someone you can walk with if you join us for your first time in a GROUP WALK!
