Volkssport Club of West Point e-NEWS

August 2006

Welcome to the August 2006 Edition of the Volkssport Club of West Point newsletter!

We organize our letter with club information first, other walking information second, then a Calendar of Events.

Next Group Walk:

  • Rhinebeck, on THIS Saturday, 5 August (see Calendar below)

Remember – due to summer hours, registration and the walk are earlier than usual! There will be NO official club meeting or lunch after the walk, but we’d suggest that any folks do join each other at the end on an ad hoc basis somewhere in the lovely
village of Rhinebeck for lunch after the walk.

Tom Nisonger will be in attendance at the starting point to assist walkers signing in. He’ll also have AVA event and distance books for sale if any club member wishes to purchase them.  (Thanks Tom!)

Next Club Events:

  • Nyack, on Sunday, 10 September - Nyack Street Fair Event (see Article and Calendar below)
  • Hudson Valley Ramble, on Sunday, 17 September -  Cold Spring Event (see Calendar below)

2007 Elections Anyone interested in becoming an officer?

If you are interested in becoming an officer of the club, we will be holding elections this fall for the 2007 calendar year.  Club President Joan Kimmel has already stated she will NOT be running for re-election…so if you are a current club member and you’d like to run for any one of the four positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer), feel free to send Joan an email at the club email address (See below) indicating so, and we’ll get you on the ballot!  We’d like to have the elections held at the October 1st Round Pond event, so get your names or nominations to Joan by 15 September.

Atlantic Region Calendar Attached!

Club President Joan Kimmel has provided the current version of the Atlantic Division Calendar in both a WORD format and an HTML format in case you can not read WORD documents.

West Point Community Fair Attendance?

If you are part of the West Point community and are going to be at the West Point Community Fair Thursday evening, check out club table out!  Many of our club officers will be in attendance!  Stop by and say hello!

We’re famous in The American Wanderer this summer!

If you’re a member of the American Volkssport Association (and we hope you all are!), check out the summer (August/September) edition of The American Wanderer!

  • On page 15, you’ll see a picture of our club taken by club member Judy Polczer of our excursion we took to New York City in June.
  • On page 23, an article appears about our club’s April Fort Montgomery event written by Bob and Michelle Wegner.  They were two children of a family that came to the event from New Hampshire! Their article was unsolicited, and in fact, we didn’t know it was even going to appear until we read it ourselves!

News from other Venues:

Here’s a bit of news from our good friend Charlotte Phillips from Vermont!

Hi--Mark your calendars.  Come to Vermont and do a volksmarch on the trail around Middlebury--which is different from the seasonal on September 3.  The event walks starts at 9 AM.  The start closes at 1 PM.  After the walk, stay and help these ladies celebrate their birthdays.

The party starts around noon, at the American Legion Hall, which is also the start for the walk.  It is just off US Route 7, on Wilson Road--Number 49.  The American Legion is in back of Stone Motors--Ford dealership.

The meal is on us--everything needed will be provided--meat dishes, potato salad, corn on the cob (present menu, but may change).  We will be serving coffee, tea, and kool-aid like beverage.  There will be a cash bar open for a couple of hours.  We just want you to come and enjoy the fun.

    COME! COME!, COME.  Charlotte

Current Calendar!

These below are 'confirmed' times and dates!

We are sometime asked what a 'Group Walk' (as opposed to a Year Round Event (YRE) or Event) is - We credit our sister club in Albany, the ESCV (EMPIRE STATE CAPITAL VOLKSSPORTERS) for the following definition of GROUP walks: "Group Walk  means all meet and signup together at the same time,  get a map and start together, then you proceed at your own pace.  There are NO GUIDES for this kind of walk.. Nor does a group have to stay together. "; so when you see this term in our calendar below, you'll now know what it means!   We usually have fast walkers, slow walkers, and medium walkers,  there's almost always someone you can walk with if you join us for your first time in a GROUP WALK!
