June 11th New York City Group Walk -

Sunday 6/11 - New York City (Group Walk co-coordinated with the Princeton Area Walkers via Maureen Penta) – This is the Lower Manhattan YRE that is a great walk along the river with views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as well as many other significant landmarks in the financial district.  Here are the logistics:

o    We will meet at Bryant Park - just across the street from the New Balance Store on 42nd and 6th (a hop, skip, and a Jump from Grand Central) about 11:30 AM.

o    Some of the Poughkeepsie folks (Joan K, Andrew S, Tom N) plan to take the 9:33 AM train from Poughkeepsie (although we’ll get on at New Hamburg, perhaps) to Grand Central Terminal (GCT) that will arrive at 11:15 AM.

o    Bryant Park is across the street on 42nd street next to the NY Public Library between 5th and 6th Avenue.   When leaving GCT, turn RIGHT on 42nd Street and head WEST.   Bryant Park is less than two blocks away from GCT.  If it is pouring rain there is a college lobby directly across the street from Bryant Park (the same side of the street as Grand Central) with an overhang where it will be dry.

o    We will take the subway to get to the start point for the Lower Manhattan walk.

o    As far as lunch is concerned, we’ll arrive at South Street Seaport about 2:00 PM.  This would be just after the Titanic Checkpoint.  As you enter South Street Seaport there are many places to have lunch - Maureen imagines that if any one sits at a table at any of the restaurants outside they would connect with other walkers:

o       The first you meet would be "Red".  It looks great.

o       The next is "Il Porto" where Maureen has had lunch several times.

o       Later down the road  on is a Pizza Uno and then after that Seaport Cafe and Pacific Grill.   These restaurants are all on the left.

o       Half way down the block  on the right is the Heartland Brewery which makes us a Brewery/Winery special event.  They have a nice menu there too.

Andrew will have his cellphone on at 845-464-2676 if anyone has questions or problems during the event!

Constitutional Change -

A reminder again for our June meeting on June 25th the club needs to make three changes to the constitution.

  • One is to allow us to have multiple bank accounts.  As it stands now, we can only have money in one account.   Unfortunately, that is a non-interest bearing checking account (we don't pay any fees for this, however).  We would like to have the ability to put some of our excess funds into a Certificate Account for interest bearing purposes.   We also would like to put a clause in that states that not only the Treasurer has signatory power, but also one of the other officers in case the Treasurer becomes unavailable or unreachable for some reason.
  • The second change is to make the fiscal year match the AVA Fiscal year (Legal requirement as we are using the AVA's 501(c)(3) umbrella account for non-profit status.   That change is from 1 July through 30 June instead of the calendar year January-December.
  • Third and finally, we would like to change the membership year from  it's current calendar year specification to a 12-month renewal year which we've been using for some time now.

Below are the old and text proposed paragraph changes.  Our club's constitution states the changes can be made by a 2/3 vote of the membership at either a special or regular meeting ; thus, we plan to have this vote on the 6/25 club meeting ahead of the Highland Falls Group Walk.  All members are invited to participate in the vote at the meeting if you can attend!

  • Current Wording in Article IX (Finances), Section 5:

Section 5. The organization shall have one fund, the Club General (Operating) fund. Source of funds will be dues and other monies raised within the membership, as well as residue from approved club activities after expenses.

Section 7. The organization's fiscal and membership year shall run the calendar year.

  • Proposed Changes:

Section 5. The finances of the organization shall be banked in the name of the organization and the signatories to the account shall be the Treasurer together      with any one of the President, First or Second Vice President, or Secretary. Source of funds will be dues and other monies raised within the membership, as well as residue from approved club activities after expenses.

Section 7. The organization's fiscal year shall run from July 1st to June 30th to coincide with the American Volkssport Association's fiscal year.  The club's membership year shall run on a twelve (12) month renewal basis.

Re-scheduled Highland Falls Walk for June -

Due to the snowstorm we had on our regularly scheduled Group Walk in February that 'snowed out' Highland Falls, we RESCHEDULED Highland Falls Group YRE on Sunday, June 25th (see the calendar below).  As you know, you can get 'event' AVA credit for doing a walk twice each calendar year, once in the first half, once in the second half.

“Walking South” -

Recap of Interesting Walks by our club Vice President Farrell Patrick and Secretary Nancy Patrick = exclusively for the Volkssport Club of West Point Electronic Newsletter!  If you've done an interesting walk, submit the writeup for our next issue!

Wilmington, NC: What a delightful surprise! Leaving the start point one of the first magnificent homes on the trail is a dead ringer for Tara in "Gone With The Wind". The walk passes through a historic residential district which is most interesting. The old city market is now a multi level shoppers delight. The battleship USS North Carolina is available for tours and is anchored on the Cape Fear River. We got our first Riverwalk America stamp.

Kissimmee-Poinciana, FL: This was the only dud! The trail description in the Starting Point attracted our attention to the Nature Conservancy Disney Wilderness Preserve. Our hopes were high for observing wildlife as we slowed for two adult sandbill cranes and saw signs cautioning drivers to be on the lookout for baby cranes. Alas, this pair were the only animals we saw...at all. The weather that day was beastly hot and the natural trail wound through scrubby bushes and no trees. At last we came to a wooded area by a lake. By this time we were panting, gulping down water frequently and decided it was time for a shortcut back to the finish. The bright spot (besides the sun) was the friendly volunteer who registered us for the walk. She was a member of the local volksmarch club and was delighted to meet walkers on the only day of the week she worked there. There was no information available with information as to how Disney got involved with this park.

Sebastian Inlet State Park, FL: This park has much to appeal to walkers...beach, boardwalk, nature trail, ocean. Part of the trail went through an RV camper lot. Many folks were outside and gave a friendly greeting or wave and we walked past. Fishermen were cleaning their catch and attracting a huge flock of pelicans looking for a handout. It was interesting to watch them. We would return to this park anytime. The Indian River went into our Riverwalk book.

Palm Beach, FL: This is a walk we have done previously and there is always something new to see. This time we took the opportunity to tour the Flagler Museum which is on the trail. This is part of the estate of Henry Flagler who made millions with Standard Oil and railroads.

Strolling through this beautiful town is a treat and how nice that the trail goes to the magnificent Breakers Hotel...a perfect spot for an oceanside lunch. The most challenging part of this walk was finding the start point at a hospital. That particular day traffic was rerouted in preparation for a huge boat show which made things difficult. Near the hospital there is usually side street parking available within a couple of blocks...and no valet fee!

St. Augustine, FL: A second time around for us on this walk. With dumb luck we found a motel that was just a few short blocks from the start point. And, as we also found out, just around the corner from a tiny, but wonderful seafood restaurant. This walk, of course, is a history buffs delight. Although part of the trail takes in one street which is nothing but stores for tourists, it also takes the walker off the main tourist area. We took time to see the small but very interesting Lightner Museum and went inside the Castillo San Marco. This is definitely a walk not to be rushed through. Start early if possible to avoid the hordes of day trippers.

Another stamp for our Riverwalk book as we took in the Matanzas River.

Current Calendar!

These below are 'confirmed' times and dates!

We are sometime asked what a 'Group Walk' (as opposed to a Year Round Event (YRE) or Event) is - We credit our sister club in Albany, the ESCV (EMPIRE STATE CAPITAL VOLKSSPORTERS) for the following definition of GROUP walks: "Group Walk  means all meet and signup together at the same time,  get a map and start together, then you proceed at your own pace.  There are NO GUIDES for this kind of walk.. Nor does a group have to stay together. "; so when you see this term in our calendar below, you'll now know what it means!   We usually have fast walkers, slow walkers, and medium walkers,  there's almost always someone you can walk with if you join us for your first time in a GROUP WALK!
