Volkssport Club of West Point e-NEWS

May 2006

Welcome to the May 2006 Edition of the Volkssport Club of West Point newsletter!

We organize our letter with club information first, other walking information second, then a Calendar of Events.

  • Next Group Walk - Sun 5/7 (This weekend!!!) - Hyde Park - See calendar below!

  • Next Event -  Sunday, 5/21 – Mills Norrie State Park Event - See calendar below!

  • Thanks to the Renewals and New Members in 2006!
Recently, we’ve received renewals and membership dues from the following: The Koziols (John & Karen & Alice), Dotty Homan, Joan Vorbach, Susan Lynch, and Linda Kinney.  If you mailed your dues recently, we’ll acknowledge you in our next letter.  And thanks for supporting the club!

We will be mailing out membership cards to all shortly!
  • June 11th New York City Group Walk -

Keep that calendar date held!  Sometime in early June, we'll send out more information about attending our Group Walk with the
Princeton club (PAWS) and Liberty Bell Wanderers of the Lower Manhattan YRE.  We plan to start on 42nd Street near Bryant Park in late morning, do the walk, and then meet up (if you'd like) at a local watering hold afterwards for some cross-club social action!  See the writeup below for some details.  So watch your email box for the specific details on when and how to meet on Sunday, 11 June.

  • Constitutional Change -

Our club needs to make three changes to the constitution.

One is to allow us to have multiple bank accounts.  As it stands now, we can only have money in one account.   Unfortunately, that is a non-interest bearing checking account (we don't pay any fees for this, however).  We would like to have the ability to put some of our excess funds into a Certificate Account for interest bearing purposes.   We also would like to put a clause in that states that not only the Treasurer has signatory power, but also one of the other officers in case the
Treasurer becomes unavailable or unreachable for some reason.

The second change is to make the fiscal year match the AVA Fiscal year (Legal requirement as we are using the AVA's 501(c)(3) umbrella account for non-profit status.   That change is from 1 July through 30 June instead of the calendar year January-December.

Finally, we would like to change the membership year from it's current calendar year specification to a 12-month renewal year which we've been using for some time now.

Below are the old and text proposed paragraph changes.  Our club's constitution states the changes can be made by a 2/3 vote of the membership at either a special or regular meeting ; thus, we plan to have this vote on the 6/25 club meeting ahead of the Highland Falls Group Walk.  All members are invited to participate in the vote at the meeting if you can attend!

Current Wording in Article IX (Finances), Section 5:

Section 5. The organization shall have one fund, the Club General (Operating) fund. Source of funds will be dues and other monies raised within the membership, as well as residue from approved club activities after expenses.

Section 7. The organization's fiscal and membership year shall run the calendar year.

    Proposed Changes:

Section 5. The finances of the organization shall be banked in the name of the organization and the signatories to the account shall be the Treasurer together      with any one of the President, First or Second Vice President, or Secretary. Source of funds will be dues and other monies raised within the membership, as well as residue from approved club activities after expenses.

Section 7. The organization's fiscal year shall run from July 1st to June 30th to coincide with the American Volkssport Association's fiscal year.  The club's membership year shall run on a twelve (12) month renewal basis.

  • Re-scheduled Highland Falls Walk for June -

Due to the snowstorm we had on our regularly scheduled Group Walk in February that 'snowed out' Highland Falls, we RESCHEDULED Highland Falls Group YRE on Sunday, June 25th (see the calendar below).  As you know, you can get 'event' AVA credit for doing a walk twice each calendar year, once in the first half, once in the second half.

  • Craftsbury VT Weekend (Oct 7 and 8) Walk Information -

We pass along some information about the Craftsbury VT weekend event (Oct 7 and 8, see below for details) that our good friend Charlotte Philips of
    Vermont writes to say:

Come to Vermont, enjoy the fall colors and have a wonderful Columbus Day walking in Vermont. The dates of the walks are October 7  and 8th, the locations are Craftsbury Common and Hardwick--two towns about fifteen miles apart. The dates may seem very distant, but for the months involved it may be too late to get decent lodging.  However, can we offer you and your fellow walkers a deal. Rooms at the Craftsbury Common Outdoor Center.  They are used to groups like ours. They have hosted many Elderhostels, Appalachian Mountain Club groups which go cross-country skiing during the day, and the like.  Lodging is simple and comfortable, in rooms of what used to be a boarding school. Prices include meals, eaten self-serve buffet style.  Meals are wholesome, often something such as lasagna, and vegetarian options are offered.  Price per person comes to around $78, based on double occupancy. We would get a small discount on this, probably 10%.

Web site is www.craftsbury.com for those who wish to take a look.  We recently checked some of the few motels in the area and found they were already    pretty well booked for this week-end--mainly by bus trips.

For those of you planning to attend and would like a local reservation, you can get ahold of Cindy Gray to reserve a good room at the
Craftsbury Outdoor Center:  She only needs 10 people.   So, if you're interested in sending her an official deposit for the October 7 & 8 walks, here's the info:   Rates are around $75 per person, including three meals. She  will arrange bag lunches for Saturday, since most people will be going to Hardwick.

o        I need the following from those who want to stay at Craftsbury Outdoor Center

o        $30 deposit

o        Contact info:  name, mailing address, email, phone

o        Friday, Saturday, or both nights.

  • Current Calendar!

These below are 'confirmed' times and dates!

We are sometime asked what a 'Group Walk' (as opposed to a Year Round Event (YRE) or Event) is - We credit our sister club in Albany, the ESCV (EMPIRE STATE CAPITAL VOLKSSPORTERS) for the following definition of GROUP walks: "Group Walk  means all meet and signup together at the same time,  get a map and start together, then you proceed at your own pace.  There are NO GUIDES for this kind of walk.. Nor does a group have to stay together. "; so when you see this term in our calendar below, you'll now know what it means!   We usually have fast walkers, slow walkers, and medium walkers,  there's almost always someone you can walk with if you join us for your first time in a GROUP WALK!

         --------------------

Sunday 6/11 - New York City (Group Walk co-coordinated with the Princeton Area Walkers)

The Group Walk has been determined to the "Lower Manhattan”.  We will meet at Bryant Park - just across the street from the New Balance Store on 42nd and 6th (a hop, skip, and a Jump from Grand Central) about 11:15 – 11:30 AM.

Maureen Penta of
Princeton writes in her newsletter after meeting in Bryant Park  We will then take the train (subway) to the start point in Lower Manhattan.  It is a great walk along the river with views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as well as many other significant landmarks in the financial district.

We ask Liberty Bell Wanderers and all walkers to join us on this walk.  Please stop at funky "Jeremy's" along the route (you won't believe Charlie Kaiser's  favorite place)  and/or  plan on meeting at any of the many  restaurants at South Street Seaport for lunch.  The restaurants are on the left as we pass the Titanic Checkpoint - we won't miss each other, believe me.   Lunch may be inside or out and I am sure we will all hook up and see each other there.”

This sounds like a super multi-club event!
