Minutes of the Volkssport Club of West Point

 January 13, 2008

The Volkssport Club of West Point met on 13 January 2008 for breakfast and business meeting at Park Restaurant, Highland Falls. Seventeen club members were in attendance.

The treasurer's report was presented by Andrew Schmidt. The balance on hand as of 31 December 2007 was $1213.63. COL (ret) Luddy Harrison has completed the yearly audit. Donations from the club were sent to Scenic Hudson, Museum of the Hudson Highlands, Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council, Bear Mountain Trailside Museum and Zoo, West Point Fire Department and West Point Visitor's Center.

Andrew also presented a tally of 554 participants for all club sponsored walks in 2007. This number was up 25% from the previous year.

Dues renewal notices were given to those present.

There are new "short" trails for Rhinebeck (5 km), West Point (7 km) and Hyde Park (6 km). The YRE long walk at West Point is under review due to construction of the new library as well as new security signs posted around the academic area. The Patricks will make necessary changes to the route and rewrite the trail directions.

Joan Kimmel distributed cards, to those present, containing information about the club. These are to be given out to prospective members or others expressing interest in walking.

There will be no February meeting. Members will meet in New York City on Saturday, 9 February, for a group walk of the YRE Mid-Town. The start point, New Balance Store, will be the meeting place between 1130-1145.

The new date for the Earth Day walk is Saturday, 26 April; a change from the tentative date of 19th. The start/finish will be the Holiday Inn Express in Fort Montgomery. The Patricks have contacted the Fort Montgomery Methodist Church about providing a pay as you go soup lunch following the walk. Details to be forthcoming.

The Mills Norrie State Park walk will be 4 May. Central Valley/Woodbury Common walk will be 7 June.

Tom S. has a commitment from the owner of the Depot Restaurant in Cold Spring to be the start point for a YRE in Cold Spring. The membership voted affirmatively to make this walk a YRE beginning in 2009.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned and all present went to the Visitor's Center to register for the YRE/West Point.
