HOURS: Daily, dawn to dusk. Walk only during
daylight hours.
DISTANCES / TRAILS: 5 / 10
km 10 km trail [rated 1+] is on city
sidewalks through Rock Falls and Sterling; towpath along the Hennepin Canal.
Other features include Centennial Park and Rock River.
5 km trail [rated 1+] is on
city sidewalks through Rock Falls and Sterling. Wheel chairs and strollers will have difficulty on the 10 km.
Water and restrooms will be available at the Start/Finish
point.
Sterling has more than a
dozen murals in the downtown vicinity, highlighting the 18th and 19th century.
Sterling is known as "The Hardware Capital of the World", Sterling has
long been associated with manufacturing and the steel industry. The
cities of Sterling, Nebraska and Sterling, Colorado were both founded by former
residents of Sterling, Illinois as they branched out across the West.
This is one of four walks along the Lincoln Highway in Illinois.
Walkers completing all four walks will be eligible to receive a special
patch as a reward. Indiana is also hosting five events along the Lincoln
Highway.
AWARD
& FEES: The Award is a
4-3/4" x 2-3/8", 100% embroidered patch. All participants must register
at the start point and carry a start card. Participation is free.
Award and IVV credit is $7.00. Credit only is $3.00. Please
pay by check. Fees (if any) and completed start cards are mailed to the
Heartland Walkers in the addressed, postage paid envelopes provided.
Fees will not be refunded for those
who do not participate.

LINCOLN HIGHWAY PROGRAM:
The Lincoln Highway Adventure
continues in 2011 and 2012 with a series of Year Round Walks in Illinois and
Indiana. Pick up a Code Word card from one of the Illinois Series Events
and a Code Word card from one of the Indiana Series Events. Write the
code word from each walk on this card to obtain the "I Walked Them All"
patch. Illinois Series Events Chicago-Frankfort - YR-0831; Franklin Grove
- YR-0684; Geneva - YR-1976; and Rock Falls - YR-1384. Walk all four
events in this series and receive the "I Walked Them All" patch for Illinois.
Indiana Series Events Columbia City - YR-0807; Ft Wayne - YR-0907;
Plymouth - YR-0980; Valparaiso - YR-1254; and Warsaw - YR-0700. Walk all
five events in this series and receive the "I Walked Them All" patch for
Indiana.
DIRECTIONS: From I-80 in Illinois: Take Exit 45 to merge onto IL County Route
40 North toward Peoria/Rock Falls/Sterling. Drive approximately 26 miles.
In Rock Falls turn left at traffic light onto W 10th Street. Travel
approximately 0.4 miles to 6th Avenue. Turn left onto 6th Avenue.
Make second right turn into parking lot. This parking area
accommodates the Police Department, the Public Library, and the Visitor Center.
Request walk box from the staff at the Police Department reception
desk.

FACILITIES, AMENITIES & STIPULATIONS:
Restrooms and water will be available at the start point.
Everyone is welcome.
Participants may walk, jog, or run. An adult must accompany
children under 12. Pets are allowed on the trails but not in
buildings. Please observe leash and pet clean-up
laws.
This event will be held regardless of most weather conditions.
Carry
water regardless of temperatures so you stay properly
hydrated.
