Liberty Bell Replica Location: Portland "In 1963, an exact replica of the Liberty Bell
all the way from Baltimore, Maryland, was presented to the city on the 4th of
July. It found a home in the east entrance portico. During the
Vietnam war protests in 1970, a bomb explosion shattered it. It was
repaired and moved across the street to Terry Schrunk Plaza. When the
building (City Hall was remodeled) reopened in 1998, the Liberty Bell was moved
back to City Hall." The Newspaper Index at Central Library
reveals some history. There are numerous articles indexed from the local
newspapers, which reveal that on November 21, 1970 the original bell [built by
McShane Bell Foundry, Baltimore, MD] was shattered/destroyed by an explosion.
By February 1971 the city was looking into replacing the bell. On
March 5, 1971, City Council voted to replace the liberty bell for $8000 in a
contract with the original Foundry, McShane Bell Foundry of Baltimore, MD.
The "new" Liberty Bell arrived in late August 1972. Apparently the
bell had, "one too many cracks", and the City refused to pay. The dispute
with the Foundry was settled in 1974, and The City paid $6,000 for the
replacement. |
