American Authors and Literary Landmarks     John Hope Franklin . . . "We must get beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey."     The "Rules". The American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Program started on July 1, 2006 and ends on June 30, 2011. Complete 15 events anywhere in the United States associated with an American author or literary landmark. For example: birthplace, cemetery, homes, city where the book takes place, or when the trail passes where you can see places described in the book. A list of events will be available with registration by state and additional information will be posted on the AVA web as more events are identified. You may choose to focus only on mysteries, children's books, fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction, history, town histories, poetry, suspense novels, etc. Or like a library you can enter a wide variety of events in your program booklet. Passing a bookstore or a library does not count unless it has historic significance. Remember this is a fun program. You can be as general or as specific as you want. If you find the connection, it counts. You do not have to read the book for the event to qualify. An event stamp can only be entered once with a "+" and once without per year. Repeating the same event in another year is allowed. Each line of the record book is used to record the IVV event stamp. This program is not retroactive. You may not record previously completed events in the book. All walks must be stamped in the record book using the IVV event stamp. Handwritten entries are not allowed. The American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Program Book are available for $10. Redeem it when complete to receive a 4" x 3-3/4" 100% embroidered color patch.
