One Time Walks - 2010

April 24, 2010 - Spring Special Event Big Sugar Creek State Park
Pineville, Missouri

Pineville 5k Walk

The walk through Pineville will meander through a small community that was established around 1847.  During the civil war, the Missouri bushwhackers had a serious impact on some of the older buildings that denote its heritage but the town square still has three of the early courthouses for McDonald County.

Special Programs:

Hooray for Hollywood – One of the filming locations for the 1939 movie Jesse James starring Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda and Randolph Scott. The local McDonald County library on the walk route offers an opportunity to view an Animated Movie Presentation. The area is full of lore for the life and times of Jesse James.
Museums - The McDonald County Historical Museum
Firehouses – The Pineville Fire Station
Honoring Law Enforcement – McDonald County Sheriff’s Department

Restrooms: Available at the McDonald County Library near the Start Point.

Ozark Chinquapin Trail at Big Sugar Creek State Park – 5k and 10k walks.

Heavily forested hillsides, clear-flowing streams and solitude are all features to be found within Big Sugar Creek State Park. Nestled deep within southwest Missouri, Big Sugar Creek State Park preserves a portion of the Elk River Section of Missouri's Ozarks. The Little Sugar and Big Sugar meet at Pineville to form the Elk River. The two streams derive their names from the quantities of sugar maples that formerly grew in great numbers along their bottoms.
This area of the state has a distinct natural history, featuring many plants and animals that are less common or absent in other areas of Missouri. Some typify the southern plains, including armadillos, while others, like the Ozark chinquapin tree, are restricted to the Ozark highlands.
