| History Lesson: President Lincoln attended church services in Janesville on October 2, 1859 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. This site is on the walk, marked by a plaque on the front of the church. It was the only service attended by Lincoln in the state of Wisconsin. Linciln was in souther Wisconsin to give speeches. He was invited to Janesville to speak. He stayed with a prominent local businessman and his family. Five days before his visit, the church hosted a conference of 62 ministers. The main issue of the conference ws the abolition of slavery. Church records show the parsonage was once a part of the Underground Railroad, a stopping point on the way to Canada. This is also a site on the route where John F. Kennedy made a large campaign stop during the crucial Wisconsin primary in 1960. |
