| History Lesson:
President Clinton
came to Eugene-Springfield June 1998 to visit and console the families and
survivors of the Thurston High School shooting. He personally met with wounded
students and families. Two students were killed and 22 were wounded in the
morning cafeteria shooting spree conducted by disturbed 15-year old Kip Kinkel
who also killed his parents. The president noted easy access to guns, missing
parental oversight, and the popular culture emphasizing violence as
entertainment in the background of school gun violence.
He visited again in November 2002 on the campaign trail and spoke at the University of Oregon in support of senatorial candidate Bill Bradbury. Bradbury lost to Gordon Smith. The walk goes through the University of Oregon campus where the president spoke. |
