History Lesson:  Rutherford B. Hayes was guest of honor at a state reception September 8, 1880 hosted by Nevada territorial govenor John Kinkead. Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech on the steps of the state capitol in May 1903 praising the Newlands Reclamation Project recently passed by congress that would benefit the local region.

History Lesson:  President Theodore Roosevelt has been the only president to visit the University of Reno campus in Reno which he did in May 1903.

History Lesson:  Ulysses S. Grant visited Virginia City in 1879 when it was the largest city in the state during the silver mining boom. He rode the V&T railroad, attended a play at Piper's Opera house, stayed at the Savage Mansion and toured one of the silver mines, all sites on the walk route. Rutherford B Hayes was the first sitting president to visit Nevada. He visited Virginia City September 7, 1880 and was feted with a parade, gave a speech and toured one of the silver mines.
