YR552 leads to the
National Cathedral before visiting the National Zoo. Woodrow Wilson is buried
in the National Cathedral. The Woodley Mansion, a white stucco Georgian-style
house, served as the summer residence of four presidents: Van Buren, Tyler,
Buchanan and Cleveland. YR553 walkers will have a choice of two 10km trails, mostly on paved surfaces. One leads to the Cathedral and Embassy Row and one goes through Cleveland Park to the Cathedral and to embassies not on the first trail. Woodrow Wilson is buried in the National Cathedral. YR1395 route passes JFK's home when he was serving as a freshman Congressman. Pass 3307 N Street the former residence of Senator John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jackie. From these front steps Kennedy announced his candidacy for President. This route also passes 3350 M Street. This building dates back to 1787. It was here that George Washington met with his friend and fellow soldier of the Revolutionary War, Uriah Forrest....then mayor of Georgetown, plus a number of wealthy landowners to make arrangements for purchase of land on which to build the new Federal City. Pass the Old North Bldg on Georgetown University campus that dates back to 1795, and it was from this porch that George Washington addressed the students in 1797. Pass 3238 R Street which was President Grant's summer White House. The last part of the route goes through the Park along Rock Creek, administered by the National Park Service. Theodore Roosevelt, the great outdoorsman, used to go there regularly almost 100 years ago while serving in the White House. He knew the trails and walked them, sometimes even taking a dip in the cool waters of Rock Creek. |
