VOLUME 6, NUMBER 6 June 1998

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S DESK

I am writing this from Muncie, IN, where I am meeting with the excellent 1999 Biennial Convention Committee to finalize some of the plans for our next volkssporting rally. The convention is just a year away, and I see one of our best conventions in the making.

We will have convention walks in at least five states. The awards for these walks will all feature one of Muncie's most famous citizens, Garfield. We have arranged for hotel rooms with a good variety of prices, and we already have a number of hotel reservations made. The convention center and exhibit hall are new and just across the street from the headquarters hotel, Radisson Hotel Roberts. The social events are beginning to take shape, and we should have details on these after our meetings this weekend. Workshops are being finalized and we already have a tentative commitment from Maggie Spilner, Prevention Magazine walking editor, to be a speaker and workshop presenter.

Registration packets will be out in a few months. The price remains about the same as last convention, but there will be something new. We will have a package price that will include registration, all social events and all volkssporting events at a reduced rate.

We are going to have a great convention. Be sure you plan to "Have a Ball in Muncie" with volkssporters from around the world.

ALONG THE TRAIL

IVV Book Availability and Processing. AVA policy requires that clubs have IVV Books at all regular events and, as a minimum, insert pages in their year-round boxes. The National Headquarters WILL NOT accept stamps on slips of paper, start cards or YRE direction pages. Please do not let your club be the cause of someone losing credit for an event they completed.

YRE/Seasonal Notes. Year Round/Seasonal sanction numbers should be the same as your stamp number.

If your club has a Year Round/Seasonal event that they do not renew for one or more years, the number is reused and your club must submit the paperwork as "NEW" to start the event again. If you are in doubt, call before filling out the paperwork.

Remember that if you check "Renew-No Changes" that your information must match last year's Starting Point (not corrections sent in later but the actual book). Also remember that if you are renewing and have no changes, you do not have to fill out the back page. You must, however, fill out all information on the front.

A Reminder. ALL stamps except Year-Round stamps must be received at the AVA HQs within 10 days of the end of the event to avoid the late fee.

New Walker Coupons. Please advise your start/finish workers that some of the coupons in the New Walker Packets are to be redeemed only at the AVA National HQs. Only the Free Credit coupons should be redeemed by the clubs.

Duplicate Event Stamps. The Awards department is receiving many books with duplicate event stamps. Remember that you may only receive an event stamp once per year no matter how many times you complete the trail. Distance books on the other hand, can be stamped every time you participate.

AVA Speciality Price Changes. New Specialty prices will take effect August 1st after all inventory has been completed and prices reviewed. New price sheets will be sent with the July issue of Checkpoint.

AVA Master Volkssporter Test Program. As referenced in detail in the April and June issues of The American Wanderer, the AVA is conducting a test of a new award program to honor adults and youths who walk, bike or ski together. To participate in the test, members must reside in the Mid-America region (IL, IN, KY, MI, or OH). In addition to the IVV

Book, a Master program participant is eligible to stamp his program booklet, i.e., log book, (shown below) with the IVV stamp at any sanctioned AVA event.

AVA Convention Update. Final event site selection and various details are being completed for the AVA Convention in Muncie, IN, as we publish this issue of Checkpoint. AVA Headquarters will release convention details as soon as they become available. Complete housing information for Muncie appeared in the June issue of The American Wanderer.

A Reminder. Please submit after action reports and YRE/Seasonal reports as soon as possible so that quarterly reports may be completed.

AVA Fiscal Year. AVA's fiscal year ends on June 30. Please ensure that your club has submitted all payments and/or outstanding dues by this time to help with our year-end closing. Your cooperation is vital and appreciated.

Advertising in TAW. Please take note that The American Wanderer has new dimensions; it is now 11 2 X 17 2 in size. Refer to the enclosed ad size chart when submitting future club advertisements for publication.

AVA/IVV Banners. The new AVA/IVV banners should be rolled for storage not folded. The folds might cause the finish to peel in some instances.

HQ Inventory Dates. AVA Headquarters will be closed for inventory Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 & 8. The answering machine will be on and calls will be returned as soon as possible.
