VOLUME 6, NUMBER 12
From the Executive Director's Desk
December 1998
Well, we were able to keep at least one of our 1998 New Year's resolutions. We did manage to publish a CHECKPOINT every month during the year. We will make the same resolution for 1999 and will work very hard to keep it.
Most folks like to look back on the past year and remember the good and bad things that happened during the year. It seems to give us some closure on the things we did well and not so well. I think, however, it is far more important for the AVA to look to the year to come and begin our plans for the success of the many new activities that the year will bring. I see 1999 as the year the AVA will regain its old enthusiasm and begin to rebuild into the great organization that we have talked about for almost twenty-five years.
The new year will be bringing us new national corporate support, increased visibility in the national media, a dedicated effort to find out what our volkssporters want the AVA to be, a totally new marketing effort with at least some bells and whistles, and, our greatest hope, a renewal of the spirit of volkssporting within our membership that will bring more and more people to our sport. It will be a great year as we wind down the twentieth century and prepare for our new millennium. So as we close 1998, 1 personally want to thank all of our clubs, our state organizations, our Executive Council, and all of our volkssporters for working with dedication and determination to bring new life into the AVA and to wish everyone a happy and exciting new year. Let's make 1999 the year of the AVA as we bring health, fitness, fun, and fellowship to people all across the country.

Star Club Applications.
Now is the time to send in your Star Club application. Please see enclosed forms for complete information.
Insurance Requests. Our event insurance company has informed AVA that insurance requests must not contain the word "co-sponsor' but instead a specific description, in name, of that sponsor be it the property owners, start location, etc.
The Money Bag. A Column by Director of Finance, Candace Purcell
Once again it is almost tax time. If you are like me, you want any legal deduction you can get, however, for most of these deductions you need to fill out another form - one usually not included with the tax package you receive. Be of good cheer. The IRS has available on CD Rom all the tax forms you will ever need. The cost is reasonable, around $25. To order, call 1-202-512-1800 and select option #1 or you visit GPO's web site, http://www.access.gpo.gov/sv_docs. You can also receive forms via fax, 703-487-4160.
Convention Help Needed. Enclosed in this issue of Checkpoint you will find a flyer from the AVA Convention Committee seeking assistance for convention activities.
AVA Library Subscription Program. Enclosed in this issue of Checkpoint is an offer to sign up your local library for a TAW subscription at a special price, $15 per year. Please see flyer for more details.
