TRAIL DESCRIPTION

From the parking lot at Sheridan Lake, the trail begins by crossing a small foot bridge over a clear feeder creek.  Flume Trail #50 shares this relatively flat walk with the Centennial Trail #89 for about one mile.  Fascinating trek through one of the historic gold mining areas in the Black Hills , the trail follows part of the old flume beds and there are good interpretive descriptions throughout.  This trail rivals the popular Harney area.

EVENT INFORMATION

The Black Hills gold rush was booming in 1880 when placer gold was discovered near Rockerville.  Gold processing was hampered by the lack of water until the Black Hills Placer Mining Company constructed a flume to divert water from Spring Creek.  Construction of the flume was a massive engineering project that involved the construction of 17.5 miles of canals and troughs, digging two tunnels, building a dam near Sheridan and the construction of trestles that were up to eighty feet high.
It is one of two National Recreation Trails in the Black Hills National Forest.  Old parts of the wooden flume can still be seen along the route.  One can’t help but imagine the miners who built the flume with picks, hammers and shovels.

DIRECTIONS

Take US 385 north from the center of Hill City for 6 miles to Southern Sheridan Lake Campground on the right.  Go through the entrance gate and follow the signs for the Flume Trail and Centennial trailheads on the southeast shore of the lake.  This is the western terminus of the Flume Trail and is called the Calumet trailhead.  Watch for signs.  From Rapid City, take highway 44 west out of town and turn left at Jct. 385.  Watch for the Southern Sheridan Lake campground.
